Below is information on road work from 2019
The image gallery below from November of 2019 starts at the top of Nordloch Lane to the bottom where it meets Potlach. As you view the images below in the gallery you will see many areas on the road where erosion is occurring in the roadbed due to lack of proper drainage. Mostly due to not having a good crown in the road bed.
The first phase of the roadwork in December 2019 ( before adding 1 1/2″ gravel and compacting with the the roller ) was to address the drainage issues to improve water flow and mitigate as much as possible with our limited budget the erosion problems we typically have on the road.
We then started adding gravel which was rolled and compacted to the areas of the road that need it the most. We used 1 1/2″ gravel on the road bed in an effort to build a crown. The crown is the part of roadway shape in which the center of the road is higher than the outer edges of the surface to provide drainage of water from the center of the road surface to the sides. Nordloch does not get a lot sunlight and it tends to stay wetter allowing mother nature to break down the surface more rapidly. Using the larger 1 1/2″ gravel helps to ensure the crown lasts longer and the larger size gravel will also stay in place better as vehicles drive over it.
In December of 2019 we addressed some of the drainage issues and added over 230 tons of gravel to the road bed and packed and rolled it. While it’s not perfect and there is still work to be done, we are in much better shape than before we started. Because the gravel was added during the rainy Winter season the gravel was compacted very nicely into the road bed to form a much harder crown. Each year additional gravel will be added to sections we missed in 2019 and to continue to build the crown along the entire stretch of the road. Having a hard packed crown will mitigate much of the drainage / erosion issues as well as providing a smooth road to drive on.
